Sahaj Shabd
Therapy
Harmonizing Life Through Sound
Guru Singh m.s.s. © 2001
Four thousand years ago the spiritual masters, sages and yogis recognized sound as the primal force and wrote about it in the Vedas. 'Shabd' as it's known in the Gurmukhi language is the workshop of creation. Mastery of Shabd was taught with the science of Raga (melody and pitch) and Taal (rhythm and pulsation).
The yogic science of sound is called Shabd Guru and Naad Brahm (supreme harmony) and is a part of the greater science of Kundalini yoga. Yogi Bhajan brought Kundalini Yoga out of India in 1969 where he'd mastered this sacred science as a young man and came to the west to create teachers who would spread 'peace of mind' and 'peace on Earth'. "Our music," he says, "will inspire the soul. It defines our identity and establishes our sense of self within the vastness of creation."
Psychologists today say that with this deep sense of identity we become more secure and better able to cope with life's ever-present challenges. In studying the brain they've found that we excel, our physical health actually flourishes when we obtain this inner security.

The Greek
civilization like the Yogic cultures before it pioneered the
study of sound. In the 5th Century BC there lived a mathematician,
musician and philosopher by the name of Pythagoras. He identified
the twelve-tone scale, the mathematical law of octaves and the
harmonic intervals within them; all still in use today. He postulated
that music could literally heal the body, mind and emotions
and that the most healing of all musical intervals was the harmonic
fifth. This harmonic interval, he said, is so deeply nurturing
that its resonance creates a conscious connection between the
physical body and the Soul.
One hundred years later the Greek philosopher Plato taught his
students that this universe was created from and built on sound.
He called it, "The music of the spheres", a phenomenon known
since these ancient times to link the nature of our universe
to unheard vibrations.
Western and Eastern religions speak of creation with, "In the
beginning was the Word". This Word is actually referring to
sound. Quantum physics says this sound was a "Big Bang" and
the word uni-verse itself means one-sound.
In 1905 Albert Einstein stated that time, space and matter are
identical. The perceived difference is just different vibrations.
Vibrations are sound. Now, today, with nearly a century of research
using the highest technology available, leading physicists the
world over have established what they call the 'String Theory'.
This current belief postulates that, "The very core of the atom,
deep within the electrons, protons and neutrons - ten levels
below the visible surface, everything is just a vibration, a
sound. Our ears can't hear this sound, but it's shaping the
universe — even our thoughts."

By describing this root of all matter
deep inside the core of all particles, scientists speak in terms
of locating the physical proof of God, referring to it as the
echo left over from the moment of creation. All this research
has led modern science to the same conclusions as the ancient
philosophers, yogis and Gurus before them — "all is sound".
The very foundations of sound are the rhythms found everywhere
in the universe including the cycles of galaxies, suns and stars,
the orbits of planets and moons, right down to the changing
cells of life and spinning atoms. Audible rhythms and melodies
can easily summon up our moods, which in turn influence, our
state of mind, body and health. |

In 1920 Edgar declared that sound would be the medicine of the future, "a
vibrational medicine," he said. Today a growing segment of the
medical community worldwide is aware of and involved with vibrational
therapies.
The planet Earth, like all celestial bodies, vibrates. The German
research scientist W.O Schumann identified the dominant vibration
in our Earth's atmosphere in the mid-twentieth century. It's
now known as the Schumann Resonance with the rate of 7.83 hertz
(cycles per second), a very low and inaudible C# tone. It's
important to note here that C# is the root tone of Eastern ragas
(Sa) and the true middle tone of Western music. The actual significance
of this Schumann Resonance on human health was only realized
when we began traveling into outer space — beyond the ionosphere
and beyond the Earth's vibration. In the early days of space
travel, the Russian cosmonauts and the American astronauts were
returning to Earth, disoriented, confused, nauseated and unable
to focus. Russian and American scientists, through many experiments
discovered that it was due to the absence of the Schumann Resonance
in outer space. They found that the human body actually requires
these sound waves in order to maintain balance, and the subsequent
health and focus. Outfitting each spacecraft with a Schumann
tone generator solved the problem.
Human beings are literally vibrating at the harmonic fifth of
the Planet Earth. From the evidence compiled by the human genome
research we now know that the fundamental human DNA's wavelength
is 351/702 nano-meters (billionths of a meter). This is an extremely
high and inaudible G# tone. G# is the harmonic fifth of C#,
the most perfect and healing harmony as Pythagoras stated 2600
years ago. This harmonic relationship between the Earth and
ou r bodies must be maintained for optimum health. To maintain
this requires that both the human body and the planet Earth
be in their pure and unpolluted states. Some of the technology
and all of the pollution in our modern world is blocking and
disrupting these natural Schumann waves as well as distorting
our human frequency. Society's physical and mental health are
being threatened, particularly in our larger cities. This is
why time spent in nature can be so refreshing and recharging.
Sahaj Shabd is an ancient therapeutic technique using harmonic
sound. It was revived thirty years ago by Yogi Bhajan, and taught
to Guru Singh because of his affinity with music. Sahaj Shabd
literally means the ease of sound. In this therapy the goal
is to restore human harmony within a pure atmosphere of natural
tones. Among these tones are a steady Schumann resonance (fourth
octave), ascending and descending harmonic melodies, phase shifted
binaural beat tones and a background of steady and measured
heartbeats that entrain the body into deep relaxation.
Each of our senses has a primary link; the eyes to the brain
and the present moment; the nose to our memory of time past.
Our ears on the other hand connect uniquely to the heart and
time beyond any time. Within the inner |

ear,
the hammer and cochlea translate sound into signals processed
by our heart and the heart's rhythms adjust to this sound. Rhythms
of the heart have inspired music throughout the ages and great
music in turn heals the heart. This is why listening to music
helps us relating heart to heart and can place us in an altered
state of consciousness.
Beyond the world of these five senses lies the mind's intuitive
power. During deep meditation our attachment to the worldly
senses can be temporarily |

suspended.
This reveals knowledge from our inner dimensions and through
training this intuition we can learn to perceive these subtle
dimensions while our senses navigate the outer world. Combining
these two perspectives creates solutions. It's like entering
a forgotten world of answers.
In traditional meditation it can take years of practice and
discipline before achieving this level of discovery. Until this
level is achieved we are faced with the blocks generated by
our body, mind and emotions. We are more often aware of the
physical discomforts, distracting thoughts, or noises around
us than with the wisdom found in the depth of meditation. One
of the many benefits of Sahaj Shabd Therapy is that it's able
to transport a student into a deep meditative trance almost
immediately. During treatment our awareness transcends this
physical world. Since doubt and fear are attached to the physical
sensations, Sahaj Shabd Therapy introduces us to our more doubt-free
and fear-less possibilities.
There is an accumulative affect with repeated sessions of Sahaj
Shabd Therapy in which we memorize the so-called pathways into
this intuitive consciousness. Through periodic repetition we
learn to navigate what the ancient yogis called the Ananda Samadhi
(the causal plane). Mystics of every religious tradition have
documented these ecstatic spiritual experiences and the power
they hold to shape our lives.
